Planting shrubs in backyard

One of the most popular ways of beautifying any backyard is by planting shrubs. Unlike trees, shrubs are small and convenient, especially for small backyards.

Planting shrubs:

Before planting any type of shrub, it is essential to understand the quality of the soil in your backyard and whether it is suitable for the shrubs you have in your mind. If you have slightly less fertile soil, it first needs to be replaced with good quality soil or organic humus. If you plan to plant the shrubs a little later in the day, care should be taken to water the plant as soon as you get it from the nursery. They should be housed in shady areas of your garden as too much sun can dry the roots. The best way of planting any shrub is by digging a hole in any ideal location of your backyard. The hole should be two to three feet deep and wider than the spread of roots. The lowermost portion should be filled with old leaves, peat etc. Shrubs can then be planted, with organic manure spread around the planted shrub. Directly applying fertilizers near the base of roots should be avoided as they can even burn them out.

Before planting, you must decide the way you want your shrub to grow. Shaping the shrub is much easier if it is first planted properly in the first place. Early spring is the best time for planting any kind of shrub though the conditions can vary from place to place. Therefore, it is necessary to get all possible information about the shrubs you are planning to buy. Once shrubs are planted, regular practices like watering, trimming and pruning need to be undertaken properly to ensure maximum health and growth. Some of the popular varieties of shrubs include Rhododendrons, Boxwood, Laurel, etc. Each of these shrubs require different types of conditions and soil quality. Hence, no matter how beautiful Rhododendron looks; it should be avoided if you have limey soil.

Shrubs can be used for creating a boundary around your backyard. They can help you hide the unsightly details of your neighbor's messy yard and maintain the privacy of your own.
