New To Home Decorating? Learn How To Create Your Design Blueprint – Part 1
Are you planning on fixing up and redecorating your entire house, but have no clue where to start? The only thing that you probably know for certain is that you would like to take this project on, but without any outside help. You want to express yourself like never before. You want to create an environment with your own imagination and with your own resources!
So Where Do You Start?
The good news is that you do not have to be an interior design professional to make drastic improvements both inside and outside of your home. Take a deep breath, relax, and start planning your home decorating project with the use of the following technology: a pen and paper.
There is no need to hire a home improvement specialist to tell you what you like. Forget having to sort through magazines to try to mimic somebody else's house design by every square inch. All you need to do is to write down answers to questions which will create a blueprint that you can follow through with, and enjoy decorating your home with your fullest inner expression.
Time To Define Yourself
The first step in your blueprint creation is to define yourself. Find out who you are inside and allow this energy to flow as you answer the following questions:
1. Think about your favorite television shows or movie programs. Do you have fond memories of a particular house style that you may have seen. Were there any indoor scenes that made you comment to one of your friends about how beautiful it looked on-screen? What type of houses made you wish you could live there if you had the chance to?
2. When it comes to your view of the inside of your house, what would you say is your "Mantra" in terms of atmosphere? In other words, is being comfortable your first priority? Or does discomfort come in second with functionality at the lead? When you walk into your house, how do you want to feel when you take a deep breath and look around?
3. Next, be brutally honest with yourself by writing down whether or not you're a messy person. Remember, you must be totally upfront with the "inner you" here. This is not a test and nobody can judge your answers. So again, ask yourself about clutter – do you live with it on a daily basis? Do you not mind it if your belongings are out of order and in different piles around the rooms of the house?
4. Are you a functional person? For example, would you rather have your home built and designed for function instead of aesthetics? Should your home be prettier inside but less accessible for daily functions? Write down what you truly believe is best for your style.
5. What type of designs do you like to hang on the walls and other places, like the refrigerator for example? Do you prefer to have tightly organized patterns, like squares and rectangles or do you prefer off-the-wall type of fun stuff like cartoon designs and clown pictures?
All of the questions above are designed to help you understand yourself a little better. There are hundreds more that you can add to this list and although some questions may seem irrelevant to interior design, the function of writing down a list and answering your questions is to try to filter out the self-judgment you may have about what you really like and to stop fearing the idea that your friends or family may not approve of your design choices.
