Measures taken for Mold related health issues are on the upside swing in the present day. There are numerous property owners, landlords, employers and mold victim relatives in Canada, the USA and the world over have raised pertinent questions to bring about awareness of mold related health problems. They have been rewarded with legal and medical options to help minimize the serious health threat arising from exposure to elevated levels of indoor mold infestation

Harmful effects of Mold on Health

All molds can have the potential to cause health effects as they produce allergens that can trigger allergic reactions or asthma attacks in people allergic to mold. Yet others can produce potent toxins and/or irritants, according to the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). Some molds can be deadly and the most toxic mold is that producing mycotoxins in its spores: Stachybotrys or Black Mold. Apart from this, Aspergillus and Penicillium are the other dangerous and commonly found indoor toxic molds. Mycotoxins have the capacity to pass through the human cellular wall and disrupt certain cellular processes, causing serious health damage to workers and customers.

Mold Health Symptoms

Mold can cause health problems to both humans and animals by several different biological mechanisms, mainly infections, allergic or hypersensitivity reactions, irritant reactions, or toxic reactions, according to a University of Connecticut Health Center report. If exposed to elevated levels of indoor mold, some residents and workers can experience one or more of most common, mold health symptoms like allergies, asthma, bleeding lungs, breathing difficulties, cancer, central nervous system problems, recurring colds, chronic coughing, coughing up with blood, chronic dandruff problems that linger despite using anti-dandruff shampoos. Visionary problems, fatigue-chronic, excessive or continued-is also reported, along with general malaise, flu symptoms, sudden hair loss, hemorrhagic pneumonitis, hives, hypersensitivity irritability, itching of the nose, mouth, eyes, throat, skin or any other area, kidney failure, learning difficulties or mental dysfunction or personality changes, memory loss or memory difficulties. Open skin sores and lacerations, peripheral nervous system effects, redness of the white of the eyes, runny nose or thick, green slime coming out of nose, seizures, sleep disorders, sneezing fits, sore throat, tremors, trouble in speaking are other recognized health risks related to mold infestation.

Mold Health Studies

There is abundant evidence about the serious impact of mycotoxins and mold exposure in human disease and medical studies in both the military and agricultural environments have discovered that that significant health problems can readily arise from the inhalation of elevated levels of fungal spores and toxins by soldiers and farmers.

Moulds are microscopic creatures that thrive in damp or moist places literally bedding can become a cafeteria and breeding ground for mould. Think of your ductwork, full of mold, mildew, dust and bacteria. Modern homes are becoming more energy efficient, allowing for almost no fresh air to be circulated into a room contributing to the growth of mold.

The Disinfecting Process

A solution to the problem exists. However, it must always be remembered that prevention is better than cure. But if a structure is already infected by mold then there is a process that can be followed to red it of the problem. Cleaning the infected area with a little bit of water and bleach mixture and then following a three-step process of disinfection, oxidation, and particulate control.

Aerating the place

Ozone is a natural disinfectant, which reduces bacteria, mold, yeast, and fungi. That outdoor effect can be reproduced indoors with air purification systems. Ozone interacts with moisture and makes small amounts of hydrogen peroxide (also a disinfectant) resulting in a double disinfectant benefit in humid situations and destroying mould.

Apart from fire, ozone is nature's best oxidizer. Burning the possessions and corpses of infected people, for example, can stop epidemics. Smells can be destroyed through burning. This is oxidation in its most extreme. Without the fire, but in the presence of oxygen, smells and rot are cured over a few days. Because as an oxidizer, oxygen is less powerful than ozone and fire but less destructive. Oxidation, whether by fire, oxygen, or ozone, reduces many organics to their sub-components. Therefore having a well-ventilated place can rid the place of mold over time.

Technology at work

Particulate removal by filtration is one way of reducing particulate suspension in an area and removing particulate suspension by ionization is a better way. Filters have limits, and flow patterns develop leaving some places untreated. Air that just passed through a breeding nest of bacteria and mold will only ad to the problem. Here is ionization comes in. Ions start as stable molecules or particles within airspace. As radio waves are emitted by the antenna some of the molecules or particles get charged. These newly charged ions have a magnetic-like attraction to nearby pollutants, which grow heavier finally settling to the floor.

Mold is a fuzzy cobweb-like growth produced on organic matter by several types of fungi. Mold is also known as mildew although mold is often applied to black, blue, green, and red fungal growths, and mildew to whitish ones.

Black bread mould, Aspergillus Niger, one of the most familiar moulds, begins as a microscopic, airborne spore that germinates on contact with the moist surface of nonliving organic matter. It spreads rapidly, forming the mycelium, which is made up of a fine network of filaments. The mycelium produces other clusters of root-like hyphae, called rhizoids, which penetrate the organic material, secreting enzymes and absorbing water and digested sugars and starches. Other clusters of hyphae called sporangiophores then reach upwards, forming sporangia, which bear the particular color of the mould species. On ripening, the sporangia break open and the windborne spores land elsewhere to reproduce asexually.

Almost everyone including homeowners, landlords, business owners, and employees need to know the identities of the various toxic mold species that may be inhabiting their home, property or office.

Testing Mold

It is very important to identify toxic mold species. This can be done in two simple steps. The first step incorporates the use of a do-it-yourself mold test kits to collect mold samples during a thorough and complete building mold inspection and investigation and the second step is to send the collected mold test samples to a mold laboratory for mold analysis and mold species identification.

How to collect Mold samples

Scrape mold particles off the mold growth area onto the sticky surface of the opened mold test kit.
Use a new paint scraper that has been thoroughly disinfected with ethyl or rubbing alcohol. The scraper should be disinfected after each individual sampling to remove any possible mold contaminants, and thus avoid mold cross-contamination in the sampling process from one sample location to another.

Print the property owners name, the property address, the precise test location at that address, the testing date, and the type of sampling method (mold test kit settling), time duration of the test along with the testers name and contact information. This label should also include each individual test number, as listed on the mold chain of custody form, available free from the mold laboratory. Attach the label to the bottom of the mold test kit that contains that respective, numbered mold sample.

Precaution

During scraping of the mold growth, the tester is advised to wear rubber gloves and a full-face respirator mask with organic vapor filters to protect against exposure to toxic mold.

.

Mold in a building can be very hazardous to health. Detecting the mold and disinfecting the place will be top priority at the time but then again, steps must be taken to prevent the occurrence of the mold infection. Mold grows in moist or damp places. So any place where there is a possibility of seepage of water will definitely attract mold. To stop mould, stop the water seepage. Areas of homes that are most susceptible to mold are basements, bathrooms and exterior walls. Specific building materials where mold is most often found include wall coverings, drywall, sub-flooring, ductwork and insulation.

According to an industry survey states that mold problems have increased by more than two-thirds over the last few years and predict that this problem will get worse over the next three years. This mold problem is attributed to water and poor indoor air quality. The majority of people who were questioned in the survey say poor building practices or conditions that contribute to water infiltration and damage are the cause of growing mold and indoor air quality problems. The main reason for the growth of mold however, was the deterioration of a roof or wall, lack of building science knowledge, poor construction practices, condensation from air leakage and deterioration of plumbing.

Get Rid Of Moisture To Stop Mold

Water is well known to be the single greatest contributor to mold growth, along with the right temperature and a food source. More and more mould control professionals are recognizing that water causes damage in obvious ways such as through a flood, leak or plumbing failure and through less visible forms of transport, such as condensation from air leakage.

The solution to remedy mold problems is to control moisture infiltration into a home, as well as condensation and humidity within a home. These include the use of improved mechanical ventilation systems, insulation and air barrier systems and exterior moisture control systems. Mold professionals explain a clear connection between mold and poor indoor air quality, along with their negative effects. As with mold, indoor air quality problems have grown over the last three years and are expected to get worse in the next few years.

Mold is a common household problem and homeowners unable to deal with severe mold problems and the damage caused to structure, health and hygiene need mold remediation professionals to help them circumvent these issues. Such a professional needs to have a recognized certification from a reputed institute to assure the customer of getting value for services extended to him. For this, the professional is expected to have comprehensive knowledge provided him through mold remediation courses.

Who needs mold remediation courses?

In today's competitive world with mold being a problem in many American homes, the need for remediation professionals is rising and those having a recognized documentation of their skills armed with extensive knowledge about mold and its affected issues are more likely to gain customers and expand business than mold professionals depending on odd jobs. Success in the mold inspection and remediation industry is assured for businesses aided by the information given by mold remediation courses.

Curriculum of mold remediation courses

A good mold remediation course will cover aspects on how to start a business, develop a marketing plan and win customers as well as maintain a profitable venture through refresher modules, made available for study at later dates as newer findings and developments take place in the mold remediation industry.
Some of these mold remediation courses have low annual membership fee like $100 while others charge $300/year, depending on the knowledge extended to the learners. The courseware may cover learning the principles of building science and moisture intrusion critical to evaluating fungal contamination apart from precautions to be taken during the process of mold removal, cleaning, decontamination and educating the customer about preventive steps towards a cleaner, healthier, mold-free home.

Benefits of mold remediation courses

There are many mold remediation courses available at the state as well as national level. A bit of counseling at Mold training institutes will clear the cobwebs as to which is best for the professional in terms of distance, practicability of courseware, fees and utility. The recognized institutes have training and certification programs to provide education and authoritative credentials for Mold Professionals. Some institutes offering mold remediation courses also provide their student-professionals with a National Referral Service to connect consumers with inspectors and remediators in their area and to help consumers find out important information about the mold inspection and remediation industry. These courses provide and promote excellence and professionalism in the Mold Remediation industry and provide a code of ethics to educate members and inform the public of the benefits and scope of a professional mold remediation- simplifying the task of business marketing and networking for mold remediation professionals.

The leading biological pollutants generated in a home are mold, mildew, fungi and bacteria. Molds such as fungus mold and slime molds are most often found in areas that have high humidity levels. Bathrooms, kitchens, laundry rooms or damp basements (especially after flooding) are prone to mold growth and reproduction and this can prove to be a serious health and hygiene problem, if not checked immediately.

Results of mold problems

It is important to try and prevent mold and mildew growth, and if it's too late, a homeowner has the option of going in for professional mold remediation and mold removal. Mold releases spores in the air that can float throughout the house and this can cause severe allergic reactions such as watery eyes, runny nose and sneezing, nasal congestion and fatigue, especially to those with a mold allergy. In fact, when mold starts to reproduce inside a home, it can cause severe structural damage amounting to thousands of dollars in damage-repair and possibly make family members very sick from mold exposure. However, hope springs eternal and there are many established mold cleaning, prevention, and mold removal methods to deal with this persistent problem that really do work.

Dealing with mold problems and prevention methods

The only way to prevent mold from recurring is to get rid of the root cause, which is usually excessive humidity, moisture or water seepage. This can be done by proper and tested methods of mold removal and by eliminating moisture. Basements must be dried out and humidity levels maintained at about 50% relative humidity or lower to prevent mold growth. Dehumidifiers can be very useful. Vapor steam cleaning or vacuuming with High Efficiency Particulate Absolute (HEPA) filter vacuums can reduce mold spore concentrations in damp areas and carpets, but if not done properly mold spores can remain or be spread into the air.

Fortunately, there are several mold prevention products available in the market today such as furnace filters that are washable and durable. These filters help keep out seasonal allergens before they enter the house and are a great way to help prevent allergies before they begin. Air purifiers are a good option for eliminating allergens; mold and gas removal and the newer ones are perfect for quiet bedroom use. Vacuum cleaners have been modernized with HEPA canisters and such models keep particulates that cause allergies sealed in the vacuum, giving you better allergy relief indoors. Bed linen, mattresses and covers are being manufactured such that they offer comfort and resistance to dust mites as they are being created with hydodown- white goose down that is specially cleaned so that is doesn't provoke allergies.

When mold growth runs out of water for reproducing, it goes dormant just waiting for future water availability. Hurricanes often create massive mold infestation problems as does humidity, water leakage and excessive moisture, which alone is sufficient for indoor mold growth. Even the smell of dormant mold can make mold-sensitive people sick and just because mold is not visible; it is no surety that a home is mold-safe. The worst hidden mold within walls, ceilings, floors, crawl spaces, basements, attics and heating or cooling equipment and ducts.

Steps in Mold abatement

The first step to mold abatement would call for mold diagnosis, which can be done by mold testing the air of the basement, crawl space, attic, all rooms and also the outward airflow from all heating/cooling duct registers for the possible presence of elevated levels of airborne mold spores, in comparison to an outdoor mold control test. There are reputed do-it-yourself mold test kits or one can hire a certified Mold Inspector for this job. Mold treatment needs to be safe and effective for removal of mold, remediation, mitigation and complete abatement. In order to do this the homeowner is required to: Contain the mold from spreading to uncontaminated areas, Kill the mold, Remove any dead mold and protect the cleaned out area against future mold infestations.

Safety tips for Mold abatement

Residents or workers experiencing any possible toxic mold health symptoms, presence of strong smell of mold, visible signs of major mold growth anywhere in the building and if the building tests positive for elevated levels of airborne mold spores all require the occupants being moved temporarily to a mold-safe place until after successful mold remediation and clearance testing.

Solutions for Mold abatement

Find and locate all visible or hidden toxic mold infestations in the entire home can be done by thorough, all-around mold inspection and mold testing (with mold laboratory analysis and mold species identification of collected mold samples). Hidden mold is a strong possibility if a building smells moldy, but the sources are not visible or, if there has been water damage and residents are reporting health problems. Replacing mold-infested heating/cooling equipment and ducts is a good idea, if the owner can afford to do so. Otherwise, repeated mold spraying with a mold fogging machine and a mold home remedy recipe into the return air duct while the system is running on fan ventilation to deliver the fungicide to internal surfaces is equally effective too.

Insurance companies are shying away from insuring any form of damage caused by mold. Traditionally, damage caused by mold has been covered by insurance where it results from a covered peril, such as a broken pipe, a storm, or fire suppression efforts, but not where mould has occurred over time due to general wear and tear. However, public awareness and knowledge of the health hazards caused by mold have increased through the years. Techniques and services for cleaning up mold have become more complicated and costly. As a result, insurance companies are refusing to cover mold claims under existing policies and actuaries are rewriting their policy terms and condition to exclude all coverage for mold. A situation that governmental regulates, proper underwriting and competitive forces in the insurance marketplace will remedy the situation.

A complete copy of the insurance policy will explain coverage's, the policy limits for each coverage and the effective dates of the policy. Review the fine print of the policy form itself to identify what's insured, what's excluded, and what you have to do to prove your claim. Review any endorsements added on to the policy form to see if they change, eliminate or add coverage's to your policy.

Making a Claim

Most insurance claims on mold damage arise in one of two circumstances the first being when mold comes to the attention of the insured along with the discovery of moisture buildup, water leakage or water intrusion that has been present for some time but has been undetected or after a sudden flooding or leak from a plumbing system and that there has been a delay or failure to adequately dry out water damaged parts of the building.

Kinds of claims

Insurance claims are made for direct damage to the property or for damage to the neighbor's property caused due to leakage from the insured's property. If the insured is claiming for own damage it is known as a first party property claim. If the insured is claiming damage to defend a claim by another person such as tenants suing the insured for mold contamination-the insured is making a third-party liability claim to the insurance company.

Whatever the circumstances it must be clear with the insurance company as to what kinds of damage are covered by the policy and what constitutes mold damage.

Mold is fungus that grows on plants and fibers and is associated with damp, musty locations such as bathrooms, basements and attics. It can travel through the air as tiny spores to wet areas to breed further and needs to be nipped in the bud lest it spread to other areas. This is where mold cleaners play an effective role to safeguard the structural integrity of any home and the preserve the health and hygiene quotient of the inhabitants.

Procedure requiring use of mold cleaners

The first step before using any mold cleaner is to identify and eliminate sources of moisture after properly assessing the magnitude and area of mold contamination. With the help of a mold cleaner, the homeowner is required to de-contaminate and dry the moldy areas and then contain these areas. The final step would be to bag and safely dispose of all material that may have moldy residues, such as rags, paper, leaves and debris- to eliminate the problem completely

Types of mold cleaners and their purpose

Clean up for less porous items/ solid items such as floors, cabinets, solid furniture, require complete mold removal to begin with. This can be done using an ordinary household cleaning detergent while wearing protective gear comprising gloves, mask and eye protection. Using non-ammonia soap or detergent (or a commercial cleaner) in hot water is recommended for scrubbing the mold-affected area. Additionally, a stiff brush or cleaning pad for cement-block walls or other uneven surfaces can also be used. Rinsing the items with water would further clean them while using a wet/dry vacuum cleaner for removing water could save time and energy. Sometimes air cleaners are used as mold cleaners to remove indoor mold/associated odors. Ozone is a strong oxidizing agent that is used as a disinfectant in water too.

Mold cleaners with disinfecting agents

The use of mold cleaners containing disinfecting agents or use of such disinfecting agents is usually not recommended as these can be toxic for humans, not just molds. Disinfectants are meant for application on cleaned materials to ensure that most microorganisms have been killed and therefore, not intended for use along with mold cleaners such as soap or detergent. Professionals suggest these disinfecting agents only be used when necessary and handled with extreme caution. Instead, post-rinsing of contaminated materials, a solution of 10 percent household bleach in water can be used as a disinfectant. This diluted bleach solution kept on the treated material for about 10 minutes will show effective results. Precautions to take while using bleach are never to mix it with ammonia as toxic fumes may be produced and to keep the area well ventilated.

Molds in any home can cause mild to severe hygiene, sanitation and health problems, apart from also being the primary cause for structural damage. This is because mold can reproduce fast as the mold spores spread in the air and moisture present in the environment and cling to other similar surfaces, if not treated and fixed at the earliest.

Nature of Mold and types of damage possibilities by it

Mold, at its basic explanatory best, is fungi that reproduce by releasing tiny spores into the air and when these spores land on moist objects, they may begin to grow. There are thousands of different types of mold and we encounter many of them every day, in our homes and outdoors. The real estate community is abuzz with talk about insurance and liability issues involving Stachybotrys chartarum, also known as black mold or toxic mold, is a deadly mold, causing severe health damage to all exposed to it. Some homeowners are know to have even burned down their homes, and everything in them, because they felt it was the only way to eradicate toxic mold from their surroundings. Juries have awarded huge sums of money to homeowners who initiated lawsuits against their insurance companies, with most awards given to people whose insurer did not pay for moisture-related repairs in time to prevent severe mold problems. Awards have also gone against homebuilders when juries felt that shoddy workmanship contributed to the mold. Mold damage has become such a common and severe problem for so many Americans that most homeowner policies now include a clause that excludes or limits payments for mold-related issues. While mold is a problem, in most instances its growth can be prevented or stopped before it causes excessive damage.

Places susceptible to mold damage

Homes that have been flooded are at serious risk for molds, especially in areas when are high humidity and temperatures as these provide the mold with the perfect place to reproduce before cleanup begins. The houses suffering the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, some of which are still flooded by water, are a perfect example places likely to suffer extreme damage from mold.

Tips to discourage mold growth and prevent mold damage

Installation of a dehumidifier in chronically moist rooms can help prevent mold build up and potential damage that could have been caused in the home. Avoid carpeting damp areas and insulate pipes and other cold surfaces to discourage condensation. Installing storm windows eliminates condensation on glass and the covering of crawl space with plastic ensures sanitation and good circulation of dry air, needed to prevent mold growth and stem damage.

Soap has been made out of wood ashes, animal fat, salt and water and has served cultures the world over for centuries. Soap makers still rely on lye and fat. Soap that is made from saturated fats, which are invariably solid at room temperature, will be hard and rich. These include butter, palm oil, lard, or coconut oil. Unsaturated fats give soap other qualities.

Soaps come in a variety of shapes and sizes. These soaps have been molded in plastic, wood and glass molds that come in every conceivable size and shape such as Zodiac signs to Celtic knots.

The Molding Process

When all the ingredients are mixed the soap is poured into a mold to cool, harden, and cure. However, there are instructions to be followed for the care and use of soap molds such as the casting temperature. Soap molds have been successfully tested with glycerin temperatures of up to 180F without warping. However, it is recommended to pour the soap base at least 10-20F lower than these temperatures, or as low as possible, which will increase the mold's working life. To avoid warping, it is important when casting glycerin into plastic molds, to use a thermometer to ensure that your soap temperature is below the maximum recommended casting temperature and decreasing.

Many molds are designed to cast soap at any required depth, up to the maximum stated weight. This flexibility allows one to pour whatever weight of bar needed at the time. The techniques recommend for filling and unmolding is to pour the cast almost full leaving approx. 1/8"-1/4" of space at the top. When the soap is ready to release, place the mold on a flat surface with the cavities facing down, and press down steadily with the palm of your hand on the center of the top of the cavities until the soap unmolds.

Cleaning the Molds

Usually rinsing the molds in warm water will clean the mold. One may also wash the molds in warm soapy water, if necessary, to remove any leftover oils or soap deposit. Allow the mold to dry at room temperature, never wiping the mold, as this may cause scratches that will show up on the soap.

The presence of mold in a home can be very dangerous. It leads to respiratory problems and other health issues of the inhabitants, in addition to compromising the integrity of the home's walls and foundation. Testing is not costly, and may help prevent serious problems and significant expenses in the future.

Do it yourself

It is not uncommon to find a little mold in the bathroom perhaps on the tiles or under the washbasin. This is quite easily spotted and checked simply by cleaning with a bleach and water mixture. More entrenched mold infections may require the use of an EPA-registered fungicide. In addition to cleaning however, you must also take steps to make sure the mold does not re-occur, by removing the source of moisture that has allowed it to grow. Mold will always return if there are water problems such as broken water lines, or damage by storms. Mold also occurs if there is seepage from the foundation or floors, or if any part of the house has constant high humidity. Mold may also enter in on the bodies of pets, or even on the bottoms of peoples' shoes. The Asian custom of removing shoes before entering a home is actually very useful in preventing the intrusion of mold and other unwanted elements.

A visual inspection for mold and moisture around windows, sinks, and any water lines in the house is usually a good start. An inexpensive moisture meter available at a home improvement store is quite useful for the purpose. Mold can be detected through other means such as an odor emanating from vents or ducts. Ducts containing mold can be especially dangerous, since they can easily spread mold throughout the house.

Professional help

A standard pre-purchased home inspection will not always reveal mold problems. A professional inspection may be very necessary keeping the hazards in mind if the mold problem is serious. A professional inspection is not costly and provides for thorough inspection. A professional inspector will use a thermal imager to detect moisture that would normally be canceled. The professional home mold inspection will include a thorough leak detection and moisture analysis, air quality analysis, relative humidity testing, and drainage evaluation. Some professionals also use a fiber-optic camera to inspect wall cavities. Equipment not available to the do-it-yourselfer.

Before you start cleaning the mold from the room, it is advisable to ensure the room is well ventilated. There are products available that are designed specifically for mold, which can help you, deal effectively with this smelly problem. Preventive measures can be taken to ensure the mold does not return and you can do this by eliminating the underlying problems that caused it.

Mold Removal Methods

If your mold problem is very severe, you may need to consider hiring professional help offered by several established mold remediation companies, who will do a good job of cleaning up your personal space for you. It is necessary for good health and hygiene that inhabitants of a mold-infested house avoid breathing in mold or mold spores. In order to limit exposure to airborne mold, those homeowners resorting to treating the mold themselves may want to wear an N-95 respirator, available at many hardware stores and from companies that advertise on the Internet. These respirators cost about $12 to $25 each. Some N-95 respirators resemble a paper dust mask with a nozzle on the front; others are made primarily of plastic or rubber and have removable cartridges that trap most of the mold spores from entering. In order to be effective, the respirator or mask must fit properly, so carefully follow the instructions supplied with the respirator. A second precaution would be to wear long gloves that extend to the middle of the forearm, which provide protection and adequate coverage. Also recommended, when working with water and a mild detergent, are the ordinary household rubber gloves, which can be a good substitute too.

Some precautions during mold cleaning

If the homeowner is using a disinfectant, a biocide such as chlorine bleach, or a strong cleaning solution, the use of relevant gloves- made from natural rubber, neoprene, nit rile, polyurethane, or PVC- is recommended, as one should avoid touching mold or moldy items with bare hands. Wearing goggles that do not have ventilation holes is a good precaution too, as these help reduce possibilities of getting mold or mold spores in your eyes.

Penicillin, a product of the green mould Penicillium notatum, revolutionized antibiotic drugs after its discovery in 1929, and the red bread mould Neurospora is an important tool in genetic experiments.

Ways of detecting mold

A thorough inspection of a building is a sure way of detecting any form of mold. During the inspection one must be aware of any musty smell as well as keep a watch for damp areas and rot. A musty smell is a sure indication as well as the first indication of the presence of mold. Rotting material and water seepage are another of the sure indications of mold. It is dangerous to leave mold unattended. Unfortunately, anytime can be the season for mold. There are mold spores everywhere in the environment looking for a moist organic surface on which to grow. A musty odor can be an indication to mold growing or if you can see mold, you have a serious problem. Reliable sampling for mold can be expensive since it requires special equipment and training.

Protection from mold

People react to mold, living or dead so the mold must be removed. During removal protect your health by using a mask or respirator that will filter out mold spores. Wear eye protection, rubber gloves, and clothing that can be immediately laundered. Dampen moldy materials before removal so that airborne spores can stick to it and so minimize the number of airborne mold spores. The use of testing kits available in the market is a good way to detect the toxic variety of mold. However, depending on the severity of the problem, it would be best to let the experts handle a major problem to prevent any untoward health problems.

Crown moldings are decorative details that can be added to a room to spruce it up or give a definitive touch to its theme. They are also referred to as 'sprung cove' moldings as they are used to cover the seam where the ceiling and wall meet. There is endless variety in styles and designs to choose from but it is cutting the crown molding, which is the tricky part.

Guidelines for cutting crown molding

At the back of all crown molding are upper and lower edges that meet the ceiling and wall squarely and these are the edges that are used to guide you in making accurate cuts. A miter saw is the best and easiest way to cut crown molding correctly. It can be a power miter saw or a hand miter box. The first step would be to measure the molding pieces precisely as there is no use for crown molding cut hastily and just a little too short. Next step would be to set the wall side edge of the molding against the back fence of the saw and ceiling side edge against the saw base. Cutting slowly and carefully in a straight line, ensure that the molding remains seated against the saw's fence throughout the process. For corners, cut opposite 45 degree angles so that the crown molding pieces fit together. It is recommended, whenever possible, to complete a run of crown molding using just one piece. For longer stretches, mitering the ends of two pieces at parallel 45-degree angles is suggested so that they fit together to continue the line- this is called a scarf joint and hides a gap if the wood shrinks.

Most crown moldings are narrow, so the average miter saw will be able to handle it with ease. To cut cove moldings with bevel and miter angle at the same time, use a compound miter saw, which has a second pivot point on the blade assembly.

Finishing steps to a cutting crown molding project

The simpler crown moldings can be fastened in place with tiny nails and glued together at the ends while the complex, intricate designs with multiple pieces, need to be attached to a square nailing strip that fits into the seam where the ceiling and wall meet – this gives extra depth to the crown molding. The handy person may need to drill pilot holes to keep from splitting the wood and nail them in place with finish nails at each wall stud location.

Mold control is a far better option than mold treatment as it consists of simple precautions a homeowner can take to eliminate the possibilities of mold creation, spreading and subsequent damage to home and health. Of primary importance is the necessity to avoid humidifiers, because humidity promotes mold growth and to have good ventilation in moisture-laden areas: bathrooms, basements and other dark, moist places that commonly grow mold. Keeping a light on in closets and using a dehumidifier in basements to remove air moisture, is a good way of mold control.

Steps to prevent mold growth and mold control

Use air conditioners with de-humidifiers, as these are effective in removing excess air moisture, filtering out pollens from the outside and providing air circulation throughout the home and dry air from these make it difficult for mold to thrive. (Filters should be changed once a month).

Avoid wallpaper and carpets in bathrooms, as mold can grow under them. Use bleach to kill mold in bathrooms. Surfaces that have mold on them can be cleaned with bleach in a small quantity. All sources of leaks must be traced and fixed as mold thrives in damp conditions. All houseplant soil should be checked regularly to ensure it is not damp and the same applies to firewood/lumber kept outside. Keep an air filter or ion and ozone generator in the basement or moisture-driven attic to destroy mold and keep the air clean. Clean the bottom of the fridge to ensure mold does not grow under it and for controlling mold, if it already exists in certain parts of the home, place an air purifier in your home that emits negative ions and ozone.

Equipment that helps in Mold control

The new generation generators, air filters and air conditioners have negative ions and ozone, which are both capable of reducing the effects of mold. Negative ions are able to remove the spores from the air, to reduce the allergic reactions that people may suffer as a result of mold. It is the mold spores released by the mold, when inhaled that cause these allergic reactions. Negative ions are much more effective than air filters (even HEPA air filters) at removing allergens, such as mold spores and research indicates that ozone has also been found to be lethal for mold as ozone inactivates mold, rendering the mold cells harmless.

Mold is a very common problem in all households at some point in time or the other, though most people may not be aware of it. A mold is a fungus that is very much a part of the environment and plays a major part in the outdoor environment by breaking down dead organic matter. However, mold growth indoors is a problem that can and should be avoided, for health and hygiene reasons.

Basic features of mold

Molds reproduce by releasing tiny spores, which are invisible to the naked eye, but are present in the atmosphere and survive by floating around in the air. Mold may begin to grow if a spore lands on a wet surface and any excessively damp spot can be a typical infestation area promoting mold growth. Mold spores can reproduce and cause health problems if not checked in time and prove toxic too as certain molds produce irritants, allergens and in some cases, a potentially toxic substance or mycotoxins. To touch or breathe in mold spores can cause allergic reactions in sensitive individuals and their reactions can be immediate or delayed. Those prone to asthma can suffer severely and mold exposure can irritate the skin, nose, eyes, throat and lungs of both allergic and non-allergic people.

Controlling mold growth

Indoor mold growth needs to be controlled by determining the moisture indoors. If there is mold growth inside the home, it requires immediate remedial measures. The water source needs to be located and fixed as soon as possible. If the mold is cleaned up and not the water problem, then the mold problem is likely to come back. Depending on the size of the mold problem, the homeowner can decide if it can be a do it yourself project or calls for professional handling. For areas less than 10 square feet, following simple guidelines for dealing with mold growth covers is sufficient.

Guidelines for mold management

The US EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) guide recommends certain steps for homeowners that can raise the air quality of their homes. As mold can cause excessive structural damage, health problems and sanitation issues, if not checked in time, it needs to be addressed on least suspicion. If the heating/ventilation/air conditioning system is contaminated with mold, the air ducts in the home may require cleaned. It is suggested that such a system not be run if contaminated with mold as it could spread throughout the building. If the water and/or mold damage was caused by sewage or other contaminated water, then a certified mold cleaning professional is the best bet.

There are several DIY kits available which help one to cast jig molds and these contain everything you could possibly need to make different styles of lures. There are over 400 popular styles of jig lures and sinkers available and the highest quality molds in the business offer a full assortment of hooks, finishing accessories and melting equipment.

Popularity of Jig molds

The main reason for the popularity of jig molds is that they are easy and inexpensive and all the accessories to meet the demands of sport fishing environment can be made available at the click of a mouse-as online retailers give variety and discounts to make the deal more attractive. These jig molds have position hooks and components, such as guards, swivels, or forms inside the mold and detailed instructions to get the best out of your money's worth.

Steps to Jig molding

The lead is melted, using a melter designed for production requirements and the specific gating of the mold in question. After granting sufficient cooling time, remove the molded lead castings and detach the Sprue with flush-cut nippers or gate shears. This is an amalgamation of artistry and strategy to make your own bag of tricks: the process is finished by applying paints and glitters to make the lure as attractive as possible and gluing lure eyes will draw in the fish closer. Adding on the bodies and tie-on materials for some inevitable action gets them to take the final bite. Jig heads are very versatile tackle available to anglers and now easily available molds make the artistic angler even more ambitious to put his individual stamp on this stylized lure.

The issue of keeping homes home mold-free is taking on many homeowners and builders by surprise, as what used to be considered a harmless fungi and common house problem is posing a severe health and sanitation risk, if not checked in time. The news is that mold can cause serious health, sanitation and structural damage if not controlled and here is where the need for mold management is felt.

Steps towards effective mold management

It is very important to eliminate moisture from the home and keep regular checks for the same to prevent creation and spread of mold. Definite tell tale signs would be musty odors, watermarks on walls and ceiling, sudden asthma attacks or allergies (for more severe mold problems). The issue of mold management becomes ever complicated with litigation, lawyers, new homebuilders and such like, and extensive research is being carried on to best address this problem. If detected early, mold can usually be removed by a thorough cleaning with bleach and water. To prevent mold from re-growing, however, it is essential that the source of the moisture be eliminated and the affected area properly dried, cleaned, and if necessary, replaced. Proper disposal in safe bags of any material with moldy residue such as rags, paper or debris, is crucial for eliminating possibilities of re-growth of mold.

Insurance policies as means of mold management

Mold, like rot and insect infestation, is generally not covered by a homeowner's insurance policy, unless the mold is caused as a direct result of a covered peril such as a burst pipe; in such a case, there could be coverage for the cost of eliminating the mold. Stachybotrys chartarum, also known as black mold is a deadly mold, causing severe health damage to all exposed to it and litigation involving this type of deadly mold has juries awarding huge sums of money to homeowners who initiated lawsuits against their insurance companies, with most awards given to people whose insurer did not pay for moisture-related repairs in time to prevent severe mold problems.

Effective mold management steps

The CDC- Centers for Disease Control and Prevention – are of the opinion that mold is everywhere and can be found both indoors and outdoors. Outdoor mold is commonly found in shady, damp areas and in soil whereas, the indoor variety of mold exists where humidity and moisture levels are high, such as in basements, kitchens, bathrooms and on ceilings and wall interiors where water from leaky pipes, roofs or windows can accumulate. Keeping damp areas at minimum and installing de-humidifiers to promote ozone and freshness is the best way to reduce possibilities for mold growth and manage the problem at the root.

Most modern American homes are built with standard baseboard moldings as well as door and window trim but if the beauty and grace of decorative woodwork such as chair rail and crown molding, are desired, then these are most times, selected and installed, as each room in the home is decorated. Those handy with their hands may consider this a DIY project and purchase- or rent tools, get advice at the home center/ lumber yard on the best ways to make mitered cuts for the purchased moldings. If the room has angled walls or high ceilings, then hiring a carpenter to do the installation may be the wiser choice.

Tips for crown molding selection and preparation

Choose molding styles based on the architectural style of your home and room to be decorated; while contemporary homes can use sleeker moldings, those with period style architecture can have elaborate decorative molding. The height of crown molding is decided by the size of the room and the height of the ceiling. Designers recommend crown molding at about one inch of molding for every foot of ceiling height, but in smaller homes, this formula can be scaled back by as much as half so it does not overpower the room. Before buying moldings, determine the lengths available. Plan the layout carefully to minimize the number of joints and maximize the use of each strip of molding. Buy the molding strips about ten days before installation and bring them home to give them a chance to adjust to the temperature and humidity conditions before being finished. Time and effort can be saved by priming and painting (or staining) both sides of each strip of molding before installation. This reduces trips up and down the ladder and reduces warping from moisture in the paint or stain. Let the moldings dry thoroughly for at least 24 hours, and longer whenever possible, before use.

Best results for crown molding

To achieve the best results for crown molding, if a smooth painted finish is not desired, an alternative would be to stress on a molding's details by applying, then wiping off, a layer of lumber glaze. The glaze settles into crevices, highlighting the details of the molding and giving it a great finish. A well-installed and neatly cut decorative molding can be the crowning touch needed to give an elegant finish to the home.
