A clock is an instrument to record and tell the time of the day. In the beginning of the 17th century, when it was decided that the residents of towns and cities needed to be aware of the time of the day to carry out certain duties or for the change of guard, the need for an alarm system was felt. The first clock towers were simple automated alarm systems that rung a bell that corresponded to the hour of the day. One gong for one o'clock, two for two o'clock and so on till twelve o'clock.

Need for alarms today

Clocks have taken on many designs and dimensions in the modern day world. A timing devise is included in almost every electronic gadget available today. Be it a television to switch on or off at preset time or the oven in the kitchen. An alarm clock can be set months in advance to ring out any conceivable sound as an alarm to remind one of a pending job to be completed or started.

Radios are a novel way of being reminded of a pending chore or appointment. Almost all models of radios come with built in timing devices. These devices can be preset to switch on the radio to a pre-tuned channel or switch off the radio at a preset time.

Types of alarm clocks

Modern clock radios feature a radio alarm function as well as a beeping or buzzing alarm, allowing a sleeper to awaken to music or news radio rather than harsh noise such as a ringing of a loud bell which can set off an irritable mood for the day. Alarm clocks also offer a 'snooze button', on the top of the set that stops the alarm and sets it to ring again a short while later, typically anywhere between five and 10 minutes. Some alarm clocks also have a sleep button, which turns the radio on for a set amount of time. All clock radios use an inbuilt battery backup to maintain the time in the event of a power failure. Without this feature, digital clocks will reset themselves incorrectly when power is restored, causing them to fail to trigger the alarm or trigger the alarm at the wrong time.

The message clock is an amazing new innovation in timekeeping history. It uses the new persistence of vision technology to create a real image floating in mid-air, with no intervening objects, like glass. The distinctive feature of a message clock is the based on the way the human brain perceives objects in motion to produce a stunning visual image that is guaranteed to grab the onlooker by the eyeballs.

Features of a message clock

This new age, hi-tech clock has modernistic, sleek lines and the executive-style design of these message clocks makes them great for home or office use. The user can program up to four personal messages, 200 characters each and there are variable message display settings available on the clock. The toggle switch option can be set to on or off; if on display continuously, the message clock will function like a scrolling digital billboard. Quartz-accurate message clocks have a 100 year calendar, an Automatic Daylight Saving Time conversion feature, built-in daily greetings and holiday messages – all combined with captivating special effects and fashionably designed frames.

How the message clock works

The persistence of vision statement is the underlying principle of the working of the message clock. This causes many of the flashing lights to appear continuous and as a phenomenon, has been recognized for over 350 years. Once the light from the clock strikes the retina, all detection, processing and transmission of the neural signal are chemical. The retained image is a result mainly of the time required for the production and decay of the photosensitive retinal molecules and the continuous flow of retinal information received by the brain, is interpreted in discreet packets. Some time is required to collect enough data for interpretation and this collection time is referred to as the integration time. The brain automatically adjusts for different light intensities. The integration time needed by the eye is only slightly greater than the wand's sweep time on the message clock's LED display so some flickering is noticeable. One way to reduce this flicker would be to operate the clock in a darker location, or increase the wand's sweep rate.

The history of Ingraham clocks dates back to mid 19th century. This company was a small shop situated on Birge's pond in Bristol and owned by Elias Ingraham. He was a notable case-maker for the clocks. He worked with many partners .Anson. L. Atwood, a veteran clock maker, set up and also managed the department stored for Elias Ingraham. They received around 17 patents between 1857 and 1873. His most famous design was the figure "8" door design. The most of the cases were made of rosewood and some of the popular models are "Doric"," Venetian" and "Ionic".

Before talking about the famous and antique pieces of Ingraham clock, I would like to give you a brief history of Ingraham Clock Company. The most of the cases were made of rosewood and some of the popular models are "Doric"," Venetian" and "Ionic".

They were made in several sizes and are very popular even today. Elias was succeeded by his son Edward Ingraham who became famous for his method of applying black enamel paint to wooden clock cases. They introduced the "black mantel" clocks of 221 plus different models. This technology was used to imitate the French marble mantle clocks. For the next three decades they were the leading players in the clock industry. In the early 20th century they manufactured the pocket watches and wristwatches. During the World War II the watch and pendulum clock making ceased once for all as electrical and electronic watches were introduced in the market. Later they were into manufacturing electric clocks. But for more than a century they had manufactured beautiful, unique and traditional clocks that are considered to be antiques today.

Some famous Ingraham clocks

1. Ginger bread alarm clock- a rare Ingraham clock
This clock measures around "22 inch " high and "13 inch" wide with a beautifully hand carved design on the sides was manufactured in the year 1891 in their Bristol unit. It chimes every half an hour and the inner dial of the clock is used to set the alarm time. The colour of the clock is brown stain and the door is glass with designs on it.

2. Tambour style clock
This style of the clock was made in Bristol and was designed to be kept on the mantle above the fireplace. The case of the clock is "nine and half inches high and four and three by four deep. The dial is black Arabic numerals inside brass chapter ring.

3. Kitchen wall clock
Ingraham's has also designed wall clocks with alarm dial for the kitchen. They are around "22 "inches high and "4 "inches deep. The dial is has roman numerical and the alarm dial is brass with Arabic numerals.

Once, Bristol in Connecticut was known as the clock capital of the world as many clock factories were located there. The Ingraham's were the most popular for their designs and style, later on for the black enamel painting on the wood- that gave the clock the name "Black mantle clock". The apple shaped wooden wall clock with golden ring and black spade hands and Arabic numerals is another masterpiece of theirs. They were credited for the "Gothic" style cases, which includes round, sharp and steeple types. Edward Ingraham set up a clock museum in Bristol show casing some of the rare variety of timepieces.

Older model clocks are wound with a key after about a week and are called '8-day clocks', while some of the more modern styles have been adapted for use with batteries.

The original clocks were designed as public timepieces and were fitted on the top of a tower mainly to ensure that the bells were audible. These striking clocks only sounded an alarm, usually in the form of a gong every hour because the clock face had not been thought of until the seventeenth century. These clock towers were invented to do away with the requirement for a human to manually ring the bell as a public time signal.

It was not until these mechanical clocks were developed that their clock makers realized that the mechanism could be adapted to turn a dial, with hourly markings on the face, behind a fixed hand to indicate the passage of time or the hour of the day. This is opposed to the modern-day clock of a fixed dial with moving hands.

Where to construct a Clock tower?

When these clock towers were constructed it posed a problem of who would take the responsibility to wind them every day, as these first public timekeepers were mechanical devices and not the automated kind we know today. Therefore, the clocks were invariably fitted as part of a church or municipal building such as a town hall, but many clock towers were also are free-standing.

Clock tower mechanism

The mechanism that turns the hands of a clock inside the tower is known as a turret clock. It often marks the hour and sometimes quarters of an hour by sounding large bells or chimes, the clock may be designed to play simple musical phrases or tunes as well. Cock towers are mostly admired for their aesthetics they once served a very important purpose when clocks and watches were not all that common. Before the middle of the twentieth century, most people did not have watches clock towers were therefore placed near the centers of towns and were often the tallest structures in the town.

Best known clock towers

There are three clock towers that have gone down in the pages of history for various reasons. Out of these are the clock tower, which houses the Big Ben of the Palace of Westminster in London, the Rajabai Tower in Mumbai, and the Spasskaya Tower of the Moscow Kremlin. The Clock Tower in Leicester, England, is a major landmark in the city, owing somewhat to the fact that it is the de rigueur meeting point in the city.

Majestic clock towers have become beautiful timeless signatures of many town squares, business parks, shopping areas, and college campuses. The imperial presence of a clock tower immediately creates a sense of place in virtually any public gathering area.

Atomic clocks are precise timepieces, which are regulated in correspondence with a characteristic invariant frequency of an atomic/ molecular system. They can be electric or electronic timekeeping devices that are controlled by atomic or molecular oscillations.

A brief history of Atomic clocks

The year 1948 witnessed the creation of the first atomic clock, which utilized the vibrations of ammonia molecules. The error between a pair of such clocks- the difference in indicated time if both were started at the same instant and compared later on- was typically about one second in three thousand years. In 1955, the first cesium-beam clock (a device that uses the exact frequency of the microwave spectral line emitted by cesium atoms as a reference) was put in operation at the National Physical Laboratory at Teddington, England. It was anticipated that such a clock would gain/lose less than a second in three million years. The U.S. standard is the NIST-F1, in service since 1999 with an impeccable track record of neither gaining nor losing a second in 20 million years.

Features of Atomic clocks

As accurate timekeeping devices, regular clocks need to contain or be coupled with some apparatus that oscillates at a uniform rate to control the rate of movement of its hands, or the rate of change of its digits. Mechanical watches and clocks use oscillating balance wheels, pendulums and tuning forks but when the question is of measuring time in the most precise manner possible, it is atomic clocks that win hands down. Atomic clocks have the unique feature of using oscillation of atoms/molecules and thus afford greater accuracy and ordinary clocks have a lower frequency of oscillations so it is not possible to use them as a direct means of controlling a clock. An atomic clock is controlled by a highly stable crystal oscillator with an output that is automatically multiplied and compared with the frequency of the atomic system, which in turn, automatically corrects errors in the oscillator frequency. The time display is with a digital or similar stylish readout device.

Uses of Atomic clocks

Many a standards laboratory at the national level prefers timekeeping at the hands of atomic clocks, which averaged to produce a standard called international atomic time (IAT). The time signals from these standards laboratories are highly accurate and are relayed around the globe by short-wave-radio broadcast stations or by artificial satellites. These include signals being used for tracking space vehicles, electronic navigation systems and studying the activity of the earth's crust.

The need for humans to track time has been around from time immemorial. Starting from tracking the sun at different times of the day to ancient scientists inventing the sundial. The clocks of today have been developed to keep time with an accuracy of millionths of a second.

The clock gets its name from a Latin word 'cloca' meaning 'bell'. The calendar preceded the clock as a devise to primarily monitor the passing days of a year and the years as well. By the 17th century clocks were invented to fulfill the need to mark the passing of much smaller periods of time such as hours. By the middle of the 17th century clocks were keeping accurate time down to the second. Today the atomic clocks are used to keep time down to a millionth of a second's accuracy. These clocks, known as chronometers, are primarily used in scientific research and industries.

Kinds of Clocks

Smaller clocks that are portable in nature are called watches. Watches can be decorative and can also be built into any thing conceivable. Television sets, radios, microwave ovens and washing machines. In fact any conceivable electronic appliance or instrument comes with a built in clock to facilitate switching on the appliance or switching it off.

The Earliest Clocks

The earliest reasonably accurate clocks are believed to be the 13th century tower clocks that were probably developed for and perhaps even by, monks in Northern Italy. These monks needed to announce the canonical hours between times of prayer.

Four Major Types Of Clocks

Analog clocks may be mechanical or have a quartz movement. A clock face is the part of an analog clock that tells time through the use of a fixed numbered dial or dials and moving hand or hands.

Digital clocks use electronic methods of keeping time. A digital clock typically displays a numerical hour range of 0-23, or 1-12 (with an indication of AM or PM) using an LCD or LED display, although digital versions of analog-style faces exist.

Auditory Clocks are used for convenience, distance, telephony or blindness. Auditory clocks present the time as sounds. The form is either spoken natural language, such as "The time is twelve thirty-five", or as auditory codes such as a number of sequential bell rings on the hour represents the hour of the day like.

Braille Clocks were invented for the blind and preceded the auditory clocks. These were clocks with a special dial that the blind were trained to red by touching the dial with their fingertips.

Clocks come in various shapes and sizes. There are people who will give a hand and a leg to get that perfect timepiece for their favorite place in the house such as the mantle piece or the reading room. Antique clocks are a much sought after heirloom and are very expensive too. There are people who make replicas of well-known clocks like the cuckoo clock and the various grandfather clocks of yester year.

Create an heirloom

Designing and building ones own timepiece can be an exhilarating experience. Not only will one have a sense of achievement but will also learn a few secrets of the trade at the same time creating a family heirloom that will be cherished for years to come. Clocks can be built out of kits that are readily available in the market. These kits contain complete drawings and plans with the options to make a personalized face or arms perhaps even the pendulums. The kit may contain wooden or brass parts or both and need only hand tools such as small screwdrivers and clues to set up the clock which may take only a couple of hours for a small clock or maybe a few days or even weeks for long case clocks such as the grand father clock.

Creating a clock out of wooden parts

If one loves clocks and is good with handicraft, wooden gear clock kits will provide hours of creative pleasure and years of enjoyment as it graces the home not to mention the conversation piece it will make. People will have a hard time walking by the wooden gear clock without pausing to marvel at its wooden movement and listen to its warm, peaceful 'tick-tock'. A handmade wooden gear clock created out of a clock kit is destined to become a valued family treasure.

Easy to build

It does not matter if one has never made a clock before, the detailed manual provides a step-by-step explanation through the assembly process with plenty of photographs showing exactly how the pieces fit together making it impossible to get stuck at any point. At the same time learning many secrets of the art of time keeping.

We are often fascinated by the way a cuckoo clock works. It is a marvel to see a bird jolting out of the clock to tell us the hour. Cuckoo clocks with dancing couples or a farmer at his work or even a soldier marching to the beats instead of a cuckoo bird are a delight to watch. Cuckoo clocks have been in great demand the world over since the 17th century when they were made for the first time.

History and origin of cuckoo clocks

Franz Ketterer made the first cuckoo clock in 1738 in Germany. The Black Forest Area of Germany is world famous since ancient times for its cuckoo clocks. It is said that the snowy winters of this area made the people choose clock making as an alternative to farming, lumbering and trade. Intricate designs in carving and superb and innovative ideas in making mechanisms for the clocks saw the rise of this industry.

How a cuckoo clock works

Antique cuckoo clocks had hanging weights, mostly designed to resemble brown pinecones. Over a week, the heavier of the weights, which would be at the lowest position, would slowly rise and the other weight would be lowered. To keep the clock running, you had to wind the clock once a week. Modern cuckoo clocks use quartz or springs to keep time. Carved pinecones have become a designer accessory with no functional use. But the most interesting part is the cuckoo bird that comes with a cuckoo bird. On the hour, a window opens in the clock and a tiny bird dashes out, chirps the number to announce the time and goes back. Cuckoo birds are also being replaced with dancing couples, working people and even other animals like deer and squirrels.

Cuckoo clock shapes and designs

Most cuckoo clocks are shaped in the form of a house or a small birdhouse. Traditionally made from wood, most cuckoo clocks were made to resemble a birdhouse or chalets. They were also adorned with carvings of leaves and flowers. Some of them even have carvings of people and scenery.

Clocking centuries in Germany

The Black Forest region in Germany is the place where cuckoo clocks were made for the first time in the 17th century. You can visit Germany to take a look at the world's largest cuckoo clocks on display. These are so huge that you can actually take a walk inside them and see the works and mechanism from the inside.

George Lathem and his son Louie Sr. founded Lathem in the year 1919. They began by selling time recorders and watchman patrol clocks to the factories. Today they have grown to a position where the small and big companies have depended on their time clocks, time recorders, time stamps and so on. Some of the products manufactured by Lathem apart from mechanical and electronic time clocks are wall clocks, signal devices, timecards, touch stations and employee management software. Lathem products have become so much of part of life that people use it without even realizing it.

Lathem produced both digital and analog clocks. The analog clocks can be placed anywhere on the wall. They come in the round and square shape or size varying from 10 inch to 15 inch. The standard size is the 12-inch round case. To prevent tampering the stem sets are mounted behind the case top and the fine brass movements provide silent and trouble free operation. Digital clocks can be used as a stand-alone system and the four-digit display is visible even from 100 feet. The nine volt alkaline battery provides continuous time keeping even during power failure so as to display the correct time when power resumes. These features make these clocks reliable and perfect for any business environment.

Lathem Payclock

Pay clocks are automated time and attendance devices. They are used to calculate the total hours of work including the overtime put in by each employee. This system has a badge reader terminal and Windows operating system based time and attendance software. The badges have to be punched in and out by the employees. The payroll data can be later printed to reports. The pay clock system enables one to run the business efficiently and effectively. The Payclock systems are designed for both big and small organisations. The Payclock series are Payclock, PayclockPRO400 and PayclockPRO3500 series.

Lathem 4000 Series Automatic Clock

This clock is used in organisations that have a large number of staff members. This clock has metal casing and key lock so it can withstand harsh environment. Lathem 4000 series can be safely mounted on the wall or tabletop. It has a large analog clock the display of which can be seen from far. The ribbon self- reverses at the end of the spool and can be changed easily. All standard time cards work with it. It helps to track employee time for payroll and task time for accurate job costing. Lathem 4000 series is also used a Digital Work Alerter.

The most popular clock face was black with light blue trimmings… The neon clocks have dazzling chrome, heavy-duty electric motors and glass.

Why Neon Wall Clocks?

The neon clocks with the company's logos and graphics are custom designed and are very popular to campaign an event. Even long after the campaign program has ended these neon cloaks can be displayed to give publicity. These neon wall clocks can be used for visual branding and as an advertising medium.

Neon clocks–features

A medium sized neon clock can be a wonderful addition to any room. They blend with any dcor. The neon clocks remind the age of jukeboxes, jazz and art deco. The neon clock gives a vintage tone to any room they are placed. The main feature of neon clocks is that they have neon lighting, which is luminous. The most popular and attractive design is the one that features two neon rings, a outer ring and an inner ringer around the clock face. The dial and numerical of these clocks are simple. The neon timepieces are featured as interior decorating features and they recall the jukeboxes and diner of 1950s.The neon clocks display a soft and energy efficient glow that highlights the logo on the face of the clock. The neon tubes are replaceable and lasts upto 12 years even when burned 24 hours a day.

Coke Bottle Cap Clock:

This neon clock is the authentic reproduction of a classic 1950s design. The clock glass is scratch resistant and easy to clean. The neon can be turned on or off while clock keeps running. They are hand made and the electric movement is 110-volt. The clock case is aluminum with powder-coated finish. They price ranges from $300 onwards.

Billard Ball clock:

In this type of neon clock the clock has small pool balls in the place of numericals. This is illuminated with a neon bulb that is built into the frame. The hour hand is triangle, the minute hand is a pool cue and the second hand is a cue ball.

There is a wide array of neon clocks that recalls the designs and styles of 1950s and 1960s. The "Ford Cobra neon clock"," Last Chance Garage", "Harley Davidson," "Nascar " is some of the popular varieties

A time clock is a data terminal where the employee swipes the timecards and the details of the employee is entered. Kronos is a time management system software suite, which allows the employees to enter and edit the time spent in job-related activities. Kronos timekeeping system solves the complex workforce related problems by reducing the costs, increasing productivity and improving employee satisfaction. Let's see how the Kronos software works to keep the time. As soon as you log into Kronos it asks for the username and password. Once that is done you will be prompted to change the password. It's for security sake. The new password should be a combination of letters and numbers and it is advisable that it contain at least six characters. Passwords will expire every 90 days. The Kronos time sheet has to be filled out every pay period. It is an excel worksheet where you fill out the hours worked each workday in the corresponding cell. You also enter you vacation and sick leaves taken in the row provided in the sheet. The sheet can be saved too.

Kronos electronic time clock

Time clocks are installed in the education campus for employees to record the hours of task. The time clock is equipped with a display screen, keypad and vertical slot. The employee swipes the card in the slot to punch in and out. The time clock records the employee's identity and the time that the employee punches in or out. The employees are advised to use the time clock at the beginning and end of the shift. The Kronos clock records the standard hours worked as well as the overtime. When the employee swipes the card in the slot, to confirm its acceptance the clock display will show the employee's name and also display the words Transaction Accepted. Any information that cannot be documented by card swipes can be edited through timecard editor. If any changes have to be made it can be done by entering time code.

Kronos time keeping system uses an employee's work schedule, departmental work rules to calculate the employee's pay automatically. That is the information gathered by the time clocks is used to generate the employee's paycheck. They timekeeper system tracks the beginning and ending shift punches.

Wall clocks can be stylish and add colour and complement the dcor of the room. Responding to changes in the market preferences towards decorative, brighter, vibrant dcor companies have unveiled new style and collection of clocks called retro clocks. These clocks are available in handcrafted wood styles, metal, acrylic, silver. These clocks are available in cartoon characters for children's rooms, kitchen themes and so on. The retro clocks are made to renovate the traditional clocks in new designs and styles. Past and present are fused in the retro clocks

Retro era:

Clocks are wall jewels and it gives style to the room. If the style of the clock is a mixture of past and the present with a mixture a distinction of old fashion and contemporary style it is said to belong to retro era. The clocks in the retro era during 1920's were known as art deco style and in 1950's as 'diner' or 'jukebox' style. Whereas in the early eighties it retro clocks were known as minimalist style. Some clocks and timepieces of the retro era feature ads or logos in th4e clock face.

Retro Astro Wall clocks

In 1950's George Nelson designed brightly colored series of clocks known as retro astro wall clocks. The Astro clocks were designed to look like the molecular structure of an atom. George Nelson designed this during the post World War II. This astro design blends with any interior decorum of the home and office alike. The retro astro wall clocks are made of high-density plastics and the quartz movement powered by batteries.

Double Bubble clocks:

In the 1950's and 1960's Advertising Products Company of Cincinnati introduced the stylish clocks called double bubble clocks. These clocks carried graphics or logos on the clock face. They became so popular, today; many collectors of 50's memorabilia restrict their collection of clocks to Double Bubbles. The dial moves over the inner glass bubble and has either a logo or graphics and the outer "crystal "or glass bubble has the numericals of the clock. These globes are luminated with low voltage bulbs. Recently, these clocks are being redone using thee original licensed artwork from Wayne's clocks.

Midwest clocks:

Midwest is another producer of retro clocks. Recently they have come out with a new line of designs and accessories for the retro-look market. Their popular styling and design series is "Someone's in the kitchen". The clocks of these series are available in festive colors that recall the family tradition and culture. The Cookie Time, Cookie Jar is some of the collections of Midwest clocks. They are designed on kitchen magnet or ceramic ornament .the retro clocks add color, style and tone the home

Introduction:

Clocks are put in our living rooms, dining rooms and bedrooms. But there is one more kind of place where clocks are put:-our bathrooms. We have a special type of clock in our bathrooms called the shower clock. An elegant shower clock could jazz up the unappealing bathroom.

A variety of shower clocks are available in sleek and attractive models. They are generally battery
Powered and transform the bathroom with their looks and a host of different functions.

Multiple features and uses:

One need not worry if you are getting late for an appointment. Instead of estimating the elapsed time by racking our heads one can just look the time up in the shower clock. These clocks can be mounted on the bathroom walls or on the shower rods. The clock can have a radio and you can enjoy listening to various radio programs while taking a shower. One can tune in both AM and FM. You can check for traffic on your daily route. One can have a mirror in the shower clock and one can shave one's face using the mirror. It is quite likely that you may get an important telephone call while bathing. Certain shower clocks display the ID's of the callers along with the time of the calls. The clock can display the temperature in the bathroom. You could also set the alarm in the clock. One of the latest features available in the shower clock is the spy camera. Some of the clocks also play CD's. Since the bathroom is likely to be damp the clock should be able to be gripped without problems. Also it should be lightweight for portability. The majority of shower clocks are wireless.

Different Types:

Shower clocks come in a hue of colors and one can choose the color which complements the bathroom's ambience. One can get shower clocks in various shapes for instance shapes of different animals. Shower clocks should be water resistant considering the damp environment in which they exist. Most of the clocks are small and light and hence can be easily mobile.

Pricing:

Though there is a variety of models to choose and a range of prices one could acquire a good piece for 50 US$ to 100US$

A clock is generally taken to mean a device to show the time of day or night. However, a clocking device may be any instrument that registers a given condition such as the temperature of a place or clocking the revolutions per minute of a machine.

The usual form of a clock is a round gauge, with one or more needle indicators. The idea of a round gage is useful because many people can tell with experience the reading of the gauge just by looking at the positions of the needles on the gauge. A slight glance will do. People still prefer analog speedometer in their cars. The needles of such instruments make a kind of sign during operation, allowing the user to recognize at a glance, from the motion of the needle as well as its angle, if something is wrong with the system being monitored. Especially with experience, the effort required to get an overall picture from an analog gauge is usually less than that needed to interpret and understand a digital readout.

Various Airplane Clocks

An airplane has a number of clocks, if they may be called that. The Vertical Speed Indicator in an airplane shows how fast the aircraft is climbing. The traditional form of this instrument is a round gauge with a single needle. Its zero position in the middle left. When the aircraft is climbing, the needle moves clockwise, above the zero point. In a dive, the needle rotates counterclockwise, below the zero point.

An altimeter gauge shows the aircraft's height above sea level. Multiple needles indicate altitude rather like an analog clock indicates time the typical altimeter greatly resembles a clock at first glance. An altimeter-style gauge is very helpful in displaying a single quantity, which must be monitored at several different scale levels.

A plane annunciator can be used to indicate an emergency or error condition. Flashing lights alarms, voice prompts and various combinations of the three can be used to indicate such events. Annunciators are a very useful source of supplemental information in a user interface.

Perhaps the most important form of a clock in an airplane is the gyro. This constantly clocks the speed and the direction of the aircraft very accurately.

There are mainly three types of atomic clocks. They are cesium, hydrogen and rubidium. The principle behind all the three remains the same. Rubidium atomic clocks are the simplest and most compact of all. The rubidium clock uses the transition of the rubidium-87 atom between two hyperfine energy states. The rubidium atoms are forced to change their hyperfine energy state and then subjected to microwave radiations to return to their original state. When the atoms returns to the original state the frequency of the period of the wave can be used to measure time. Rubidium clocks are not as stable or accurate as other atomic clocks. However they are compact and less expensive.

Rubidium element:

Robert Bunsen and Gustav Kirchhoff discovered rubidium in the year 1861. Till 1920s this element had minimal industrial use. However the most important use of rubidium is in research and development primarily in chemical and electronic applications. Rubidium is a chemical element in the period table that has the symbol Rb and atomic number 37.Rubidium is a soft, silvery-white metallic element of the alkali metal groups. It is one of the most electropositive elements and it is ignites spontaneously in air and reacts violently with water.

Temex Time:

Timex Time is a leading global supplier of low-cost Rubidium clock and GPS- synchronized timing solutions. In 2005 they introduced plug and play Rubidium timing designer kit for system designer. Temex Time has also announced a low-cost Rubidium oscillator, the LCR-900 that creates an affordable solution for mid-end positioning test and communications applications.

Rubisource T& M- Portable Rubidium Timing Signal Reference:

This is a portable timing reference based on rubidium oscillator technology for use in test and measurement applications. The output signal provides exact timing information based on the highly accurate and stable rubidium oscillator inside. The rubidium fast warm-up eliminates the need for bulky backup batteries.

Rubisource2000:

Rubisource is a low-cost portable timing reference based on rubidium clock technology. Rubidium clock provides highly accurate, stable and reliable output. Rubisource 2000 is designed for telecom and metrology test and measurement applications. It is also a reference source used to enable fast measurement and testing of the synchronization quality of PDH/SDH/SONET Digital networks. Coupled with the optional GPS FC, the range of observation time can be largely extended to meet specific requirements.

Ansonia clocks derived their name from the company that manufactured them. The Ansonia Company was famous for its ornamental imitation gold and decorative novelty clocks. Ethereal cupids and angels, deep thinkers, athletes, infants and leisurely ladies adorning the elegant clock designs are some of the defining characteristics that set Ansonia clocks apart.

Brief history of Ansonia clocks

The founder of the company was called Anson Phelps and it was located in Derby, Connecticut. Anson started off as an importer of tin, brass and copper to the Eastern section of the states where he already owned a copper mill and therefore, had substantial financial backing and business contacts. This encouraged him to establish The Ansonia Clock Company in 1851 and the two start firm names used were Ansonia Clock Co. and Ansonia Brass & Clock Co. both marked 'Ansonia, Conn.' Forceful sales endorsement methods and a strategy based on making and selling more clocks resulting in more brass being used, brought immediate success. With success came an enhanced reputation for the Ansonia clocks being synonymous with quality timepieces; the company being appreciated as manufacturers and dealers of every style and variety- as an outlet in 43 Hanover Street, Boston preferred to call them.

Range and scope of Ansonia clocks

The Ansonia clock range proved to be extremely saleable and the business did well till 1859 when the clock and brass companies separated. The financial year of 1873 was a bit tough but this is when the clock company was incorporated. The principal clock type around this period was the spring wound shelf clock, designed in myriad patterns. Extending the range were the regulator wall clocks with all cases made of wood, chiefly mahogany, rosewood or other veneer. The Ansonia Brass & Battery Co. tag was also used on some wood and iron covered marine 8 day and 30 hour clocks.

Development of Ansonia clocks

The company gained a factory in Brooklyn, New York and transferred the entire operation there but a fire struck in the first year of operation in 1879, destroying the factory. Showing impressive resilience, the Ansonia clock plant was immediately rebuilt and production in full swing by 1880. The company continued to taste success until production ceased in the Brooklyn plant in about 1930 when Russian interests bought over the machinery and shipped it to Russia.

The wooden clocks add beauty and elegance to the room. They blend and complement with other artifacts and furniture of the room. Wooden clocks come in varying designs and styles. Looking into the history of timekeeping in 1656 Dutch astronomer Christian Huygens devised a successful pendulum clock. He used short pendulum that beat several times a second and the whole works was encased in wood. Though this was an improvement on earlier mechanical clocks, it did have minute error of less than one minute a day. In 1670 an English clockmaker William Clement made use of a pendulum about a yard long that took a full second to move back and forth. He encased the pendulum in a wooden case to diminish the effects of air currents. This gave rise to Longcase clocks and pendulum. Again in the year 1721 George Graham improved the pendulum's accuracy by compensating for changes in the pendulum's length caused by temperature variations.

Again in the year 1721 George Graham improved the pendulum's accuracy by compensating for changes in the pendulum's length caused by temperature variations.

Railway house clock:

The basic form of the clock is rectangle or square piece on which an isosceles triangle is placed. The house-faced basic form with wooden decorative elements was developed to include scenes from daily life. The face of this wooden with white numbers and hands and fir cone shaped weights. Dancing couples in traditional clothes move to music or the mill wheel rotates on the hour, while a farmer chops wood. The cuckoo itself moves its wings and beak and rocks back and forth when calling. This is the oldest cuckoo clock from the black forest.

Puzzle Clock – A wooden beauty:

Puzzle Clock is made of Russian five-ply of Baltic Birch. The wood is laser cut. The pendulum of Puzzle Clock dates back to 300 years. The clock operates using the method" verge and foliot". The top horizontal bar moves left and then right, is suspended by a thin cord. The pallet engages the escape wheel while the bar turns back and forth and the escape gear is turned in one-second intervals. The earlier versions had only an hour hand and were not very accurate. Later on the a Canadian clock maker named Joe Monincx made it extremely accurate by adding two escape wheels.

Digital wooden clocks:

The latest wooden digital clock appears to be a block of wood. This wooden clock has numerals that mysteriously appear on its surface, as if they were being projected. It works with a thin layer of wood over the numerals, so they can shine through. Until those numbers appear, it looks exactly like a Scandinavian-designed, well-sanded 10-inch-long block of teakwood. There are no buttons to be seen, no controls in sight-the time and alarm-set buttons are all hidden around back.
The antique clocks had wooden cases that were intricately carved and designed according to the style of the concerned period. Today manufacturers are trying their best to replicate the designs. Though they have succeeded, it can never equal the handcrafted cases of the early centuries.
